Chiclana de la Frontera is as old as it is famous. The town sits astride the river Iro with its famous blue bridge. Modern day Chiclana dela Frontera has both an old town and a new town but its fame lies in the beach area known as La Barrosa. Famous throughout Spain it is regarded as one of the best beaches in the country and is a favourite year after year with Spanish holiday makers. With its mansions and fantastic beach it is well worth a visit and you can linger a while in one of the seafront tapas bars or fish restaurants watching the fabulous sunsets over the island of Sancti Petri with its Roman temple dedicated to Hercules. The charm of the buildings in Chiclanas old town lies in the tiled church roofs adorned with nesting storks. You can recognise the locals by the skill with which they duck to avoid a collision with the birds as they swoop from above to gather up food scraps from the many outdoor cafes. Its indoor market hall dating from the last century is a popular meeting place for the locals and provides an insight into everyday life in the town. The new town lies beside the salt marshes and spreads towards the east. Many of the buildings are 19th century and a large building project has seen some stunning new buildings erected over the past ten years.
